Imagine undergoing surgery to treat a common issue like pelvic organ prolapse, only to develop a new, confusing lump in the area later. For some women, this mass is actually a rare condition where part of the urinary tract becomes trapped and swells. This specific condition is called an incarcerated prolapsed ureterocele.

Doctors looked at 16 cases to understand how this happens after midurethral sling surgery. They found that while these cases are rare, they are important to catch because they can cause urinary symptoms. Using a combination of ultrasound, CT scans, and MRIs helped doctors see the exact relationship between the trapped tissue and the surgical mesh.

When caught and treated with surgery, the outcomes are generally positive. Because this condition can look like other types of masses, doctors recommend using multiple types of imaging to get a clear picture. While the total number of cases studied is small, it highlights the need for careful diagnosis when patients report new lumps after their procedures.

What this means for you:
Specialized imaging helps doctors identify and treat rare urinary tract issues that mimic other masses after surgery.
