When a child is born with a brain defect, doctors often focus only on the brain. But new research shows these problems can link to heart issues too. A team looked at 1,042 children to see if these two conditions happen together. They found clear connections between brain and heart health in these young patients.

The study looked at serious risks like death, bleeding in the brain, and fluid buildup. It showed that where a brain defect sits in the head matters. Some areas linked to lower risks, while deep brain spots tied to worse outcomes. Heart problems like holes in the heart walls also showed up more often in kids with brain defects.

Treating the brain defect helped some children feel better with their heart symptoms. The results held up even when the team removed weaker studies from the math. This means the link is real and not just a fluke. Doctors now know to check both the heart and brain when one is sick.

What this means for you:
Brain and heart defects often go together in children, so doctors must check both.
