A large review of 29 clinical trials involving over 17,000 adults helped compare different ways to manage tuberculosis. Researchers looked at various digital tools, such as video monitoring, text messages, and phone calls, to see which methods best helped patients complete their treatment.
The findings showed that video observed therapy led to significantly better outcomes than standard face-to-face observation. Patients using video were also more likely to stick to their medication schedules. In contrast, simple two-way text messaging was found to be less effective than traditional in-person methods.
While these results are promising, it is important to remember that this was a large review of existing data rather than a single new trial. Because the study looked at many different types of digital tools, the results vary depending on which specific technology is used. Doctors may find video therapy especially helpful for patients who struggle to stay consistent with their medication.
