Living with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) often means dealing with frequent flare-ups that can be scary and exhausting. To make care more patient-centered, a new study plans to test if technology can bridge the gap between hospital visits and daily life.
The trial will compare two ways of managing the condition. One group will receive standard rehabilitation, while the other will use internet-connected devices, a smartphone app, and regular respiratory muscle training. The goal is to see if this high-tech approach helps patients stay stable for at least one year.
Because this is currently a study protocol, no results are available yet. The researchers are still in the planning stages of this single-institution trial involving 588 people with moderate to severe lung issues. While the design is not randomized, it aims to see if digital tools can improve daily life and exercise capacity.
