Can a plasma lipid panel help detect early stage Breast Cancer?

moderate confidence  ·  Last reviewed June 11, 2026

A plasma lipid panel measures different types of fats in your blood. Recent studies suggest that changes in certain lipids may signal the presence of early-stage breast cancer. While mammograms remain the standard screening tool, lipid panels could offer a non-invasive, blood-based option, especially for women with dense breast tissue where mammograms are less effective. However, this approach is still in the research phase and not yet available for routine use.

What the research says

Several studies have investigated plasma lipid panels for early breast cancer detection. A 2024 study developed a 15-lipid panel and used machine learning to analyze blood samples from European and Australian cohorts. In the European discovery group, the panel performed very well (AUC >= 0.94), and in an independent Australian validation group, it achieved 76% sensitivity and 64% specificity (AUC 0.81) 6. An earlier 2016 study using a similar 15-lipid combination reported even higher accuracy: in a validation set, sensitivity was 81%, specificity 94.5%, and AUC 0.938 9. Another 2021 study found that plasma lipid profiles could distinguish breast cancer patients from healthy controls with 91% sensitivity and 97% specificity 10. For triple-negative breast cancer, a 2020 study identified a 19-lipid panel that effectively distinguished early-stage triple-negative breast cancer from controls 11. These findings suggest that lipid panels are promising, but the studies vary in the specific lipids used and the populations tested, so more research is needed before these tests can be used in clinics.

What to ask your doctor

  • Are there any blood tests or research studies on lipid panels for breast cancer detection that I might be eligible for?
  • How do my current cholesterol and lipid levels relate to my breast cancer risk?
  • Should I consider any lifestyle changes to improve my lipid profile as part of my overall breast health?
  • What are the limitations of current screening methods like mammography, and could a lipid panel add any benefit in my case?
  • Are there any ongoing clinical trials testing blood-based tests for early breast cancer detection that I could learn about?
