Does an ulnar styloid fracture affect long-term function in a Distal Radius Fracture?

An ulnar styloid fracture is a break in the small bony projection at the base of the ulna (one of the two bones in the forearm). These fractures often occur alongside a distal radius fracture, which is a break near the wrist joint. While both injuries can cause initial pain and difficulty moving the wrist, research suggests that the presence of an ulnar styloid fracture does not typically change the long-term outcome for the patient.

What the research says

Research comparing patients with distal radius fractures (DRF) and concurrent ulnar styloid fractures (USF) shows that while those with both injuries may experience more pain or disability in the short term, these differences disappear over time. In a systematic review of 11 studies involving over 1,300 patients, there was no significant difference in wrist function scores between patients with untreated ulnar styloid fractures and those with only a distal radius fracture at the 6-month mark or beyond 1.

A separate study of 312 patients found that while patients with an associated ulnar styloid fracture may have a slower recovery of grip strength and wrist flexion, their results were comparable to those with isolated fractures by the 12-month mark 6. Additionally, long-term follow-up data spanning over a decade showed that factors like pseudoarthrosis (failure of a bone to heal) of the ulnar styloid did not affect clinical outcomes such as range of motion or grip strength 5.
