Does EGCG have therapeutic effects on digestive system diseases like Esophageal Cancer?

limited confidence  ·  Last reviewed June 25, 2026

EGCG (epigallocatechin-3-gallate) is the main active compound in green tea. Laboratory and animal studies suggest it may slow esophageal cancer cell growth and help with side effects like radiation-induced esophagitis. However, most evidence comes from early-stage research, and doctors do not yet recommend EGCG as a standard treatment for esophageal cancer.

What the research says

A systematic review of animal studies found that EGCG has positive effects on several digestive system diseases, including esophageal cancer 1. In laboratory experiments, EGCG inhibited the growth of esophageal cancer cells and promoted their death (apoptosis) by affecting proteins like bcl-2, bax, and caspase-3 8. It also helped overcome drug resistance in esophageal cancer cells 8. A phase II human trial tested EGCG for acute radiation-induced esophagitis (ARIE) in esophageal cancer patients. Patients who took EGCG had significant reductions in esophagitis symptoms, and the tumor response rate was 86.3% 9. The 1-, 2-, and 3-year survival rates were 74.5%, 58%, and 40.5% 9. Another review noted that EGCG may work through multiple mechanisms, including suppressing cancer cell growth, blood vessel formation, and spread 7. While these findings are encouraging, the human trial was small and not randomized, so more research is needed before EGCG can be considered a standard therapy.

What to ask your doctor

  • Could EGCG supplements or green tea be helpful alongside my current treatment?
  • Are there any risks or interactions between EGCG and my medications?
  • Is there any clinical trial testing EGCG for esophageal cancer that I might join?
  • What is the evidence for green tea or EGCG in managing treatment side effects like esophagitis?
