Does taking L-ergothioneine improve ovarian reserve markers in women with diminished ovarian reserve?
Women with diminished ovarian reserve (DOR) face reduced egg quantity and quality, which can make pregnancy difficult. Current research suggests that taking L-ergothioneine may help improve specific markers of ovarian function. A recent study showed that this supplement increased anti-Mullerian hormone (AMH) levels and lowered follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) in women with DOR.
What the research says
A single-center trial involving 40 women aged 35 to 45 found that oral L-ergothioneine improved core ovarian markers. Participants took 120 mg of the supplement daily for three menstrual cycles. The study showed that mean AMH levels rose from 1.79 ng/mL to 2.47 ng/mL. At the same time, basal FSH levels dropped from 8.22 mIU/mL to 7.05 mIU/mL. Estradiol (E2) levels also increased during the treatment period 2.
The trial also measured clinical symptoms using validated questionnaires. Results indicated significant reductions in scores for the modified Kupperman Index, which tracks menopausal symptoms, and the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index, which measures sleep quality. Menstrual symptom scores and general health scores improved as well. No product-related adverse events were reported among the participants who completed the study 2.
While another study looked at vitamin D levels in women with DOR undergoing IVF, it focused on vitamin D rather than L-ergothioneine 3. A separate case report on acupuncture for DOR showed improvements in hormonal levels and antral follicle count, but that involved a different therapy 1. The evidence for L-ergothioneine specifically comes from the trial described above.
What to ask your doctor
- What is the appropriate daily dosage of L-ergothioneine for my specific case of diminished ovarian reserve?
- How long should I continue taking L-ergothioneine before retesting my AMH and FSH levels?
- Are there any potential interactions between L-ergothioneine and other medications I am currently taking?
- Does improving my ovarian reserve markers with L-ergothioneine increase my chances of a successful pregnancy?
