How does bimekizumab compare to placebo for treating moderate to severe chronic plaque psoriasis?

high confidence  ·  Last reviewed May 25, 2026

Bimekizumab is a biologic medication used to treat moderate to severe chronic plaque psoriasis. Clinical trials have directly compared this drug against a placebo to measure its effectiveness. The results show that bimekizumab produces clear or almost clear skin in a much higher percentage of patients than placebo does.

What the research says

A Phase 3 trial involving 435 adults found that bimekizumab led to a significantly higher percentage of participants achieving a PASI90 response (90% improvement in skin severity) at week 16 compared to placebo 2. The study also measured the Investigator's Global Assessment (IGA), which rates overall skin health, and found bimekizumab was superior to placebo on this measure as well 2.

Another Phase 3 trial included 567 participants and compared bimekizumab against both placebo and another active drug, ustekinumab 1. This larger study confirmed that bimekizumab was highly effective, with a high percentage of patients reaching the primary outcome of clear or almost clear skin at week 16 1.

Earlier data from a Phase 2a study with 49 subjects also supported these findings, showing that bimekizumab improved skin severity scores (PASI) by week 28 compared to placebo 3. These earlier results helped establish the drug's safety and efficacy profile before the larger Phase 3 trials were completed.
