This Week in Diabetes & Endocrinology: New Pharmacological Findings and Metabolic Health Trends

Recent research highlights several pharmacological developments for weight management and glycemic control. From the Lancet, Phase 3 data indicates that retatrutide demonstrates dose-dependent glycemic control and weight loss in adults with type 2 diabetes compared to placebo [1].

Additionally, another study published in the Lancet reports on a Phase 2 randomized controlled trial where 40.4% to 88.8% of patients receiving elecoglipron achieved at least 5% weight loss, compared to 15.6% of those receiving a placebo [2].

Moving toward lifestyle interventions and maternal health, a systematic review and network meta-analysis in BMJ Open suggests that both aerobic exercise and high-intensity interval training may reduce fat mass in women with overweight or obesity [3].

In a different area of clinical focus, The Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism reports on the GDM2 trial follow-up. The findings suggest that untreated glucose intolerance in pregnancy is linked to postpartum metabolic dysfunction similar to that seen in treated gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM), potentially supporting the need for postpartum screening for all women with gestational glucose intolerance [4].

Finally, a narrative review in Frontiers in Medicine highlights the risks associated with unregulated substances. The authors describe how performance-enhancing peptides modulating the GH-IGF1 axis can present significant risks of endocrine and metabolic disturbances [5].
