This Week in Diabetes & Endocrinology: Obesity Management and Glycemic Control Research

Research this week highlighted various interventions for managing obesity and its associated complications. In the journal Obesity Surgery, a meta-analysis of 3,929,395 individuals living with obesity reported that bariatric surgery is associated with a significantly lower incidence of gallbladder cancer (RR 0.35-0.90) [1].

Regarding pharmacological management for gestational diabetes, a network meta-analysis in Diabetes, Obesity & Metabolism evaluated insulin, biguanides, and sulfonylureas; the authors noted that while multiple agents lower gestational glucose, the use of biguanides requires counseling regarding birth weight risks [2].

Elsewhere this week, research explored dietary interventions for weight management. In Clinical Nutrition (Edinburgh, Scotland), an exploratory analysis of a randomized controlled trial involving 209 adults with obesity found that both intermittent fasting and early time-restricted eating (iTRE) resulted in greater weight loss than standard care [3].

The study suggested that while both iTRE and calorie restriction effectively reduce weight, they may utilize different behavioral pathways [3].

A separate study published in La Clinica Terapeutica examined the effects of semaglutide on patients with obesity and chronic kidney disease (CKD). This meta-analysis of 430 non-diabetic patients found that semaglutide leads to significant BMI reduction, improved hypertension control (P < 0.02), and increased eGFR (P < 0.001) [5].

Regarding the management of Type 1 Diabetes, a meta-analysis in The Indian Journal of Medical Research evaluated stem cell therapy in 169 patients; the findings reported only a marginal reduction in HbA1c at 6 months (-0.57%), which was noted as non-significant [4].
