This Week in Infectious Disease: Pediatric Pneumonia Risk Scores and Antimicrobial Resistance

Research regarding pediatric outcomes highlighted the continued utility of established diagnostic standards. In a secondary analysis published in medRxiv, researchers evaluated five different risk scores across 1010 children with pneumonia in five African countries [1].

The study reported that no specific risk score consistently outperformed standard WHO IMCI criteria for predicting mortality among these patients [1].

Elsewhere this week, research focused on the role of technology and alternative therapies in managing complex infections. A systematic review in Frontiers in Medicine described how computational methods—including genomics, proteomics, and artificial intelligence—can accelerate the identification of conserved antigens and potential targets for drug discovery and vaccine design in parasitic diseases [2].

In a separate study published also in Frontiers in Medicine, researchers examined mycobacteriophages as tools for managing drug-resistant mycobacterial infections. The authors suggested these phages show promise for diagnosis, treatment, and environmental surveillance within a One Health approach, though they noted that human trial data is still needed before clinical application [4].

Regarding antimicrobial resistance in specific environments, a scoping review in Frontiers in Medicine identified the prevalence of Gram-negative organisms, such as Pseudomonas spp., in dental unit waterlines [3].

The review highlighted that these organisms frequently exhibit antimicrobial resistance to beta-lactams and other classes [3].

In related news regarding clinical options for Gram-positive infections, the FDA announced the approval of Zyvox (linezolid) for several indications, including nosocomial pneumonia, community-acquired pneumonia, and vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus faecium infections. The agency noted that this oxazolidinone is active against Gram-positive bacteria, including MRSA, but does not provide coverage for Gram-negative bacteria [5].
