When you break a heel bone, also known as a calcaneal fracture, getting the bone back into its proper shape is vital for walking correctly later. A new review of data from 509 patients compared using a robot-assisted screw system to traditional surgical methods. The results suggest that the robot-assisted approach helps surgeons achieve better anatomical restoration and safer outcomes.
Patients who underwent the robot-assisted procedure saw less blood loss during surgery and reported lower pain scores afterward. The study also found that these patients had better functional scores for their ankles and hindfeet. While the time spent in the operating room was similar for both groups, the robot-assisted method showed improvements in specific measurements of bone height and angles.
It is important to note that while these results are promising, this was a meta-analysis rather than a single long-term trial. Because the data comes from multiple studies, more large-scale trials with long-term follow-up are needed to confirm these findings for every patient.
