Researchers reviewed 27 previous studies that tested artificial intelligence (AI) for dental diagnosis and treatment planning. These studies used over 60,000 dental X-ray images to see how well AI could spot problems like cavities or plan treatments. The AI tools were not tested on real patients in clinics; they were evaluated using existing image collections.

The review found that, on average, the AI systems were quite accurate. They correctly identified dental issues about 85% of the time and correctly ruled out problems about 94% of the time. Some specific AI models were even more accurate. The results also suggested that using AI could help dentists make decisions faster and agree more often on a diagnosis.

It is important to be cautious about these results. The studies included in the review were very different from each other, and most looked back at old data rather than testing AI in current dental practices. The authors of the review clearly state that these AI tools need careful testing in real clinical settings before they can be widely adopted.

For now, this research shows that AI has potential as a helpful tool for dentists. It is not a replacement for a dentist's expertise. Patients should see this as early, encouraging research into future dental technology, not as a change to current dental care.

What this means for you:
AI shows promise for assisting dentists, but it needs more real-world testing before becoming a standard tool.
