Can the FindPart-w model help identify which SARS-CoV-2 lineage group my child has?

moderate confidence  ·  Last reviewed May 11, 2026

The FindPart-w model is a new algorithm designed to group SARS-CoV-2 lineages that share similar transmission characteristics. A 2025 study found it can identify these groups quickly using genetic data 2. However, this model is still in the research phase and is not a clinical test for individual patients. If you want to know your child's specific SARS-CoV-2 lineage, standard methods like PCR-based tests or sequencing are used, but these are not typically done for individual cases outside of research or public health surveillance 9.

What the research says

The FindPart-w model was developed to address a problem with the current naming system for SARS-CoV-2 lineages. Sometimes, viruses that are genetically similar and behave the same way are given different names. FindPart-w uses a mathematical approach to find groups of lineages that have the same relative effective reproduction number, meaning they spread at similar rates 2. In tests using simulated data, the algorithm could identify these groups in a practical amount of time. When applied to real-world data from the United States, it suggested that the current naming system might be splitting some lineages that should be grouped together 2. This could help researchers track the virus more accurately.

For identifying specific lineages in a sample, other methods are more established. Allele-specific probe PCR (ASP-PCR) is a laboratory technique that can detect specific genetic markers of variants. A 2022 study showed ASP-PCR could discriminate SARS-CoV-2 lineages with high accuracy, even in samples with low viral loads, and had 99% agreement with next-generation sequencing 9. This method is better suited for clinical or public health use than FindPart-w, which is a research tool for analyzing large datasets.

Other sources discuss different aspects of SARS-CoV-2 but do not directly address lineage identification. For example, one review covers antibody treatments 1, another discusses vaccine strategies 4, and others focus on mask fit 6 or testing programs 78. These are not relevant to your question about the FindPart-w model.

What to ask your doctor

  • Is there a reason to know which SARS-CoV-2 lineage my child has?
  • What testing methods are available for identifying specific variants in my area?
  • Would knowing the lineage change any treatment or monitoring recommendations for my child?
  • Are there any public health programs that track lineages in our community?
