Key Takeaway
Note that the lipodia app nearly doubled the rate of achieving a 10% LDL-cholesterol reduction compared to usual care.

This randomized controlled trial enrolled 278 adults with hypercholesterolaemia and LDL-cholesterol levels above their risk-adapted targets. Participants were assigned to either the lipodia intervention, a fully self-guided digital health application providing structured lifestyle support, or usual care. The primary outcome was the reduction of LDL-cholesterol over a 6-month follow-up period.

Results showed a -3.9% adjusted between-group difference in relative change for LDL-cholesterol in the lipodia group compared to usual care (p=0.029). Regarding the secondary outcome of a clinically meaningful reduction of at least 10% in LDL-cholesterol, 41.7% of participants in the intervention group achieved this goal compared to 23.8% in the usual care group (p=0.002). Other secondary outcomes, including patient activation, non-HDL-cholesterol, and health-related quality of life, were also significantly improved in the intervention group.

No adverse device effects were reported, and the study noted low attrition. While the results suggest that lipodia provides a scalable and guideline-concordant means of delivering structured lifestyle support, the specific magnitude of improvement for secondary outcomes was not reported. Clinical application may depend on patient preference for digital health tools.

Managing high cholesterol often feels like a constant uphill battle of lifestyle changes. For many adults with high LDL levels, finding the right support to stay on track can be the hardest part of the journey. A recent trial looked at how a self-guided digital app, called lipodia, could help patients manage their health more effectively than standard care alone.

In the study, 278 adults used the app for six months. The results showed that those using the digital tool saw a significant drop in their LDL cholesterol compared to those receiving usual care. More importantly, nearly twice as many people using the app reached a clinically meaningful reduction of at least 10% in their LDL levels compared to the other group.

Beyond just the numbers, the app helped participants feel more active in managing their own health. These users also saw improvements in their non-HDL cholesterol and reported a better quality of life. While the study is a positive step for digital health tools, talk to your doctor to see if this type of structured digital support fits your specific treatment plan.

What this means for you:
A self-guided digital app helped nearly twice as many people reach significant cholesterol reduction goals.

Common questions

How does the digital app help with high cholesterol?

The app, called lipodia, provides structured lifestyle support. In a study of 278 adults, those using the app saw a significant reduction in LDL cholesterol compared to usual care. It also helped improve non-HDL cholesterol and overall quality of life.

Is the reduction in cholesterol significant for patients?

Yes, the study found that nearly twice as many people using the app achieved a clinically meaningful reduction of at least 10% in their LDL cholesterol compared to those receiving usual care (41.7% vs 23.8%).

Are there any safety concerns with using this digital tool?

The study reported no adverse device effects and a low rate of people stopping the program. However, you should always consult your doctor before starting any new health tool or lifestyle program.

Structured lifestyle modification is the guideline-mandated foundation of lipid management but is rarely delivered in routine care. We evaluated lipodia, a fully self-guided digital health application providing structured lifestyle support, in a pragmatic randomised controlled trial conducted online. Adults with LDL-cholesterol above their risk-adapted target (n = 278) were randomised 1:1 to usual care plus lipodia or usual care alone. After six months, lipodia significantly reduced LDL-cholesterol relative to usual care (adjusted between-group difference in relative change -3.9%; p = 0.029), with nearly twice as many users achieving a clinically meaningful reduction of at least 10% (41.7% versus 23.8%; p = 0.002). lipodia also significantly improved patient activation, non-HDL-cholesterol, and health-related quality of life, with high uptake, low attrition, and no adverse device effects. As a self-guided tool, lipodia provides a scalable and guideline-concordant means of delivering structured lifestyle support that is rarely available in routine care.
