Key Takeaway
Note that Anas barbariae 200K significantly improved ILI symptom relief compared to placebo in this trial.

This randomized controlled trial enrolled 707 participants, including children aged 6 to 12 years and adults aged 18 to 65 years, presenting with influenza-like illness (ILI) symptoms for less than 24 hours. Participants were randomized to receive either Anas barbariae 200K (Oscillococcinum(R)) three times daily for three days or a placebo.

In the primary outcome, 74% of participants in the Anas barbariae 200K group experienced alleviation of ILI symptoms within 72 hours, compared to 44.5% in the placebo group (p < 0.0001). Secondary outcomes also favored the intervention group. The mean time to symptom alleviation was 46.7 hours for the Anas barbariae 200K group versus 67.3 hours for the placebo group (p < 0.0001). Additionally, the median time to return to daily activities was 4.0 days in the treatment group compared to 6.0 days in the placebo group (p < 0.0001).

The intervention was reported as well-tolerated, and no serious adverse events were reported. While the results showed statistically significant improvements in symptom duration and relief, the clinical use of Anas barbariae 200K as a homeopathic medicinal product should be interpreted with caution due to the specific nature of the treatment.

A randomized controlled trial in India looked at how Anas barbariae 200K affects people with influenza-like illness (ILI). The study included 707 participants, including children aged 6 to 12 and adults between 18 and 65 years old. These individuals had symptoms for less than 24 hours when they began the treatment.

Participants who took Anas barbariae 200K three times daily for three days saw a higher rate of symptom relief within 72 hours compared to those who took a placebo. Specifically, 74% of the treatment group felt better within 72 hours, while 44.5% of the placebo group did. Those taking the treatment also saw a faster reduction in symptoms and a quicker return to their daily activities.

The treatment was well-tolerated, and no serious adverse events were reported. While the results show a significant difference in how quickly people felt better, it is important to remember that this is a specific homeopathic product. You should talk to a healthcare provider to see if this treatment is right for your specific health needs.

What this means for you:
Anas barbariae 200K showed a significant link to faster symptom relief for influenza-like illnesses in this trial.

Common questions

Who can use Anas barbariae 200K for flu symptoms?

The study included a wide range of people, including children between the ages of 6 and 12 and adults between the ages of 18 and 65. These participants were all experiencing symptoms of an influenza-like illness for less than 24 hours when they started the treatment.

How quickly did the treatment work?

The study found that 74% of people taking Anas barbariae 200K saw their symptoms improve within 72 hours. In comparison, only 44.5% of those taking a placebo saw improvement in that same timeframe. Those taking the treatment also reported a faster return to their daily activities.

Is it safe to use this treatment?

The treatment was reported as well-tolerated during the study. No serious adverse events were reported among the 707 participants. You should always consult with a doctor to discuss the safety and suitability of any new treatment for your specific health situation.

Objective Influenza-like illness (ILI) is characterized by the sudden onset of systemic and respiratory symptoms such as fever, fatigue and myalgia, requiring prompt management. Anas barbariae 200K, a homeopathic medicinal product, is traditionally used to relieve flu-like symptoms. This study aimed to evaluate its efficacy in alleviating ILI symptoms within 72 hours. Secondary outcomes assessed symptoms relief, adverse effects, functional outcomes, compliance, and participant and investigator satisfaction. Methods This prospective, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled multicenter superiority trial with two parallel groups was conducted in primary care in India in 2021. Children (6-12 years) and adults (18-65 years) with ILI symptoms for less than 24 hours were randomized to receive either Anas barbariae 200K (Oscillococcinum(R)) or placebo. Treatment was given three times daily for three days. The primary endpoint was the proportion of participants with alleviation of ILI symptoms within 72 hours following the initiation of treatment. Results A total of 707 participants received Anas barbariae 200K (n = 352) or placebo (n = 355). Within 72 hours, the Anas barbariae 200K group showed significantly greater symptom relief than the placebo group (74% vs. 44.5%; p < 0.0001). Secondary endpoints also favored Anas barbariae 200K group, including faster symptom alleviation (46.7 vs. 67.3 hours; p < 0.0001) and shorter median time, estimated by KM analysis, to return to daily activities (4.0 vs. 6.0 days; p < 0.0001). No serious adverse events were reported. Conclusion Anas barbariae 200K significantly alleviated ILI symptoms within 72 hours, with improvements that were both statistically and clinically significant. Significant benefits were also observed across secondary outcomes, with no safety signal identified. This study showed that Anas barbariae 200K could be an effective and well-tolerated treatment for ILI symptoms.
