A heart condition called dextro-transposition of the great arteries (d-TGA) can cause serious problems for babies. While medical advances have significantly improved survival rates for these infants in recent years, the journey does not end with a successful surgery. Many children with this condition still face hurdles as they grow up.
Research shows that these children often experience neurodevelopmental challenges. This can show up as executive dysfunction, which affects how a child plans, focuses, and manages tasks during their childhood and teenage years. These issues can stem from problems with oxygen delivery and brain development that begin before a baby is even born.
Doctors are still working to improve how we manage these cases. Current gaps include low rates of finding the condition before birth and a need for better treatment plans for the brain. Because of these hurdles, many children do not receive help for their developmental delays until much later in life.
