Living with metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) often means dealing with excess fat buildup in the liver. This condition, which was previously known as NAFLD, is closely linked to metabolism and weight. Recent research looked at how intermittent fasting might change these outcomes for patients.
By looking at 389 people across eight different studies, researchers found that intermittent fasting led to a decrease in liver fat content. The study also showed improvements in the controlled attenuation parameter (CAP), which is a common way to measure liver fat. Additionally, participants saw reductions in their body weight, body mass index (BMI), and triglyceride levels.
While these results are promising for managing disease progression, the findings come from a meta-analysis of existing studies rather than one large, controlled trial. Because of this, experts say we still need more rigorous, multi-center trials to confirm these effects and create specific clinical plans for patients.
