Key Takeaway
Recognize three pillars of strategic leadership: contingent governance, culturally mediated leadership, and performance systems.

This systematic review synthesizes findings from 38 empirical studies to characterize strategic leadership within international sports organizations. The scope of the review focuses on how strategic vision, efficient implementation, and performance impact manifest across different international contexts. The authors note that strategic leadership has received increased attention since 2010.

The synthesis identifies three interdependent pillars as core components of strategic leadership: (1) contingent governance structures, (2) culturally mediated leadership, and (3) configurational performance systems. These elements are presented as the primary framework for understanding how sports organizations manage their operations and achieve goals.

Limitations noted by the authors include a heavy reliance on cross-sectional and self-reported data, which limits the ability to make causal claims. The authors suggest that future research would benefit from longitudinal designs and objective measures. These findings may serve as a guide for developing training enhancement programs and better characterizing leadership roles in sports.

A new systematic review looked at how strategic leadership works in sports organizations around the world. Researchers analyzed 38 studies from international sports competitions. They wanted to understand what makes leadership effective in different settings.

The review found that strategic leadership is not the same everywhere. It depends on three key factors: how the organization is governed, the local culture, and how performance is measured. These three parts work together. Since 2010, more research has focused on this topic.

Because the studies relied on self-reports and were done at one point in time, the findings cannot prove cause and effect. The researchers say more long-term studies with objective measures are needed.

For now, this review offers a framework for future research. It may help sports organizations think about how to improve leadership training, but it does not provide specific advice for any one team or league.

What this means for you:
Strategic leadership in sports is shaped by governance, culture, and performance systems, not a single formula.

Common questions

What is strategic leadership in sports?

Strategic leadership in sports involves setting a vision, implementing it efficiently, and measuring performance impact. This review looked at how it works in sport organizations across different countries.

What did the review find about leadership in sports?

The review found that strategic leadership varies across international contexts and has three main parts: governance structures, culturally mediated leadership, and performance systems. These parts work together.

Can this review tell me how to lead my sports team?

No. The review identifies themes from 38 studies, but it cannot prove what works best. The studies used self-reports and were not designed to test cause and effect. More research is needed.

Strategic leadership describes the various leadership styles and how different countries succeeded in international sports competitions. Leadership success is clearly determined by three inputs: a strategic vision, efficient implementation, and performance impact, i.e., increasing a country's international influence in sport. To categorize the most common research topics, main findings, and shortcomings of analyses conducted in sport organizations, a systematic review was carried out. Based on the PRISMA protocol, relevant articles published from January 2010 to August 2025 were searched in Scopus, Web of Science, and PubMed. After screening 309 records, 38 empirical studies were included. The findings indicate that strategic leadership varies across international contexts and has received increased attention since 2010. The selected studies reveal three interdependent pillars: (1) contingent governance structures, (2) culturally mediated leadership, and (3) configurational performance systems. A reliance on cross-sectional, self-reported data limits causal claims. Future research requires longitudinal designs and objective measures. The information reported may be of great interest to leaders, contributing to a better characterization of strategic leadership in sport organizations and the subsequent development of training enhancement programs. Additionally, the summary and classification provided may serve as a useful guide for future research in sport leadership.
