This review looked at 22 papers to see how high-level athletes in non-motorized surface water sports, like sailing and canoeing, are currently monitored. The study found that heart rate metrics were used in about 71% of the papers, while GPS data was used in about 47%.
While these tools are common, they were originally designed for land sports or gym equipment. Because they have not been tested against the specific environmental demands of water sports, their accuracy in those settings is not yet confirmed. The review suggests that current methods may not fully capture the unique physical demands of being on the water.
The findings suggest a need for more research to create better monitoring tools specifically for these sports. There is also a noted need for more data regarding younger athletes and female competitors. These results are meant to help coaches and researchers develop better ways to track athlete performance safely.
