Researchers reviewed 16 studies to see how different blood tests for fungal allergies compare in people with asthma. These tests look for a specific antibody (IgE) that shows an allergic reaction to fungi like Aspergillus and Alternaria. The studies examined 32 different commercial test kits.

The review found that the tests do not all give the same results. They use different methods and have different cut-off points for a positive result. The test called ImmunoCAP showed the highest accuracy. Some newer test systems showed promise for testing many allergens at once.

A key finding is that several commercial test kits have no published research showing how well they work for diagnosis. This means doctors and patients may not know how reliable some test results are. The authors suggest that standardizing test cut-offs and using newer types of fungal proteins could make testing more precise.

This review helps explain why test results might differ, but it does not prove which test is best for improving asthma care. More research is needed to connect these test results to better health outcomes for patients.

What this means for you:
Different blood tests for fungal allergies can give varying results; more research is needed to connect them to patient care.
