Imagine trying to recover from a stroke while also battling relentless insomnia. It's a common and exhausting reality that can slow healing. A new analysis looked at 46 studies to see which Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) nursing techniques might offer relief for this specific sleep problem.

The analysis compared 20 different TCM techniques. It found that a combination of auricular acupressure (pressure on specific points of the ear) and gua sha (a scraping technique) ranked highest for improving the overall clinical effectiveness rate. For improving scores on a standard sleep quality questionnaire, a technique called acupoint application—where herbal preparations are placed on specific body points—ranked the best.

It's important to understand what this analysis can and cannot tell us. The researchers combined many smaller studies, and those studies varied in quality and design. Some had a risk of bias, and others involved only small groups of patients. The analysis did not report on safety or side effects. So, while these rankings highlight potentially useful techniques, the findings come with significant uncertainty. More large, high-quality studies are needed to confirm which approaches are truly most effective and safe for people struggling with sleep after a stroke.

What this means for you:
Some TCM techniques may help post-stroke insomnia, but the evidence needs strengthening.
