Imagine waking up feeling like you have never slept at all. For people with idiopathic hypersomnia, this exhaustion is real and constant. A new study looked closely at the hearts and nervous systems of 24 adults with this condition, 10 with narcolepsy, and 14 healthy people. They spent the night in a lab monitoring heart rhythms and then tested how the body reacted to standing up and heat. The results were clear: the hearts of those with idiopathic hypersomnia raced much faster when standing compared to the others. They also struggled to sweat properly, a sign their autonomic nervous system is not working as it should.

During sleep, the study found these patients had less of the calming signal that usually slows the heart during rest. This means their bodies are stuck in a state of high alert even when they are trying to rest. While the researchers did not report any safety issues or side effects from the testing, these findings explain why some patients feel so drained. However, this was an observational study, meaning it describes what is happening but does not prove that the heart issues cause the sleep problems or vice versa.

This research helps doctors understand the physical struggle behind the fatigue. It shows that the exhaustion is not just in the mind but involves the heart and nerves. Yet, we must be careful not to jump to conclusions. More studies are needed to see if fixing these heart signals helps people sleep better. For now, this data offers a new way to look at the hidden physical toll of living with this condition.

What this means for you:
People with idiopathic hypersomnia show stronger heart rate spikes and sweating issues when standing up compared to healthy people.
