The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved a new form of the medicine Depakote, called Sprinkle Capsules. This drug, also known as valproate, is used to treat epilepsy. Specifically, it is for treating complex partial seizures and absence seizures in adults and children 10 years and older. It can be used alone or added to other seizure medicines.

This approval is for a new sprinkle capsule formulation. The capsule can be swallowed whole, or it can be opened so the tiny beads inside can be sprinkled onto a small amount of soft food like applesauce or pudding. This may make it easier for some people, especially those who have trouble swallowing pills, to take their medication as prescribed.

It is important to know that the drug's label carries a very strong warning. Depakote can cause serious birth defects and developmental problems if taken during pregnancy. Because of these high risks, the FDA states it should not be used by women who are pregnant or who could become pregnant for treating epilepsy unless other medicines have not worked.

This approval means there is now another formulation of this established medicine available. If you or a family member has epilepsy, this news might be relevant. The most important step is to have a conversation with your doctor. They can explain if this new option is suitable for your specific situation and answer any questions you have about its use, benefits, and risks.
