Partner notification is a key strategy to control sexually transmitted infections, but it is not easy. For young people between 15 and 24 years old in Southern Africa, telling a partner about an infection involves complex struggles. These struggles center on personal health fears, worries about the infection itself, and the heavy weight of social dynamics in their communities.

Researchers looked at ten studies to understand this situation, but only three met the strict rules for this review. Because the data was limited, we cannot say exactly how many people faced these issues or how often they happened. We simply know that barriers exist and they are significant.

The review found that little is known about how these young people actually experience and practice partner notification. There were no reports of safety issues because this was a review of existing studies, not a new trial. The main takeaway is honest and clear: partner notification remains difficult among youth, and we need to understand these barriers better to help them succeed.

What this means for you:
Telling partners about STIs is vital but remains very difficult for youth in Southern Africa due to health and social barriers.
