A randomized clinical trial looked at how an Effort Re-education Programme (ERP) affects oncology patients experiencing respiratory symptoms. The study followed 65 patients from the time of their hospital discharge through a one month follow-up period.

Patients who participated in the program showed significantly greater improvements in their daily functionality compared to those receiving conventional clinical practice. The researchers also observed significant differences in breathing difficulty, general performance status, and the level of burden felt by caregivers.

Other notable findings included shorter hospital stays for the intervention group and no hospital readmissions during the follow-up period. No safety concerns or adverse events were reported during the study.

Because this was a small trial with 65 participants, these results should be viewed as an encouraging step rather than a definitive rule for all patients. The findings suggest that adding home-based breathing programs to discharge planning could help support long-term care for people recovering from cancer-related respiratory issues.

What this means for you:
A breathing program may help oncology patients improve daily function and reduce caregiver burden after hospital discharge.
