Are we getting closer to eliminating measles in the Eastern Mediterranean?

Measles is a highly contagious and sometimes deadly disease that we know how to prevent with vaccines. A look at vaccination efforts in the Eastern Mediterranean Region from 2013 to 2018 found that more children received the recommended two doses of measles vaccine during that time. This is good news because getting both shots gives much stronger protection.

However, the data also shows that vaccination coverage in the region remains below the 95% level that the World Health Organization says is needed to eliminate measles. We don't know exactly what percentage of children are vaccinated, just that it's not reaching that crucial threshold. The study didn't track specific safety issues with the vaccines, which have long been proven safe and effective.

It's important to remember this was an observational look at vaccination trends, not a controlled experiment. We can't say the vaccination efforts directly caused any specific changes in measles cases, only that more children are getting vaccinated. The data doesn't tell us exactly how much coverage increased or which countries are doing better or worse.

What we can take away is that progress is being made toward protecting children, but there's still work to do to reach the vaccination levels that would stop measles from spreading in these communities.

What this means for you:
More kids are getting measles shots, but not enough to eliminate the disease yet.
