Researchers created an artificial intelligence system called CardioAI to help with heart health in Nigeria. The system has two parts: one predicts a person's risk of heart disease, and the other tries to predict whether patients will complete their rehabilitation programs. The heart risk model was tested using 1,025 existing patient records, while the retention model used 800 computer-generated records.
The heart disease risk prediction performed very well in computer tests, accurately identifying high-risk cases. The system also showed which factors mattered most for heart risk, including lifestyle habits, blood pressure, and cholesterol. However, the part that predicts whether patients will stay in their programs was much less accurate, suggesting this is harder to predict.
It's important to know this system hasn't been tested with real patients in Nigeria yet. The heart risk model was trained on data that wasn't from Nigeria, and the retention model used artificial data. Before this tool could be used in hospitals, it would need careful testing with Nigerian patients to see if it works well and safely in real clinical settings.
