Researchers examined the oral health of 656 Special Olympics athletes with intellectual disabilities across 10 events in the United Arab Emirates. These athletes underwent annual dental screenings using a standardized system and visual examinations to assess their needs.

The study revealed widespread issues. About two-thirds of the athletes showed signs of gingivitis, while 64% had untreated dental decay. Additionally, 20% reported experiencing oral pain, and 72% required some form of dental care. Poor daily brushing habits were also common, with 36% of participants not brushing every day.

Because this was a cross-sectional study, it captures a snapshot in time and cannot prove that one factor causes another. The researchers noted that incomplete records were excluded from the final count. While no safety concerns were reported regarding the screenings, the high rates of untreated disease highlight a critical need for targeted prevention programs and better access to specialized dental care for this population in the region.
