If you have fatty liver disease, you might be looking for natural options. A new systematic review of existing research suggests that an ancient herb, Schisandra chinensis (also known as five-flavor berry), could help.
The review looked at how extracts from this fruit and its active compounds affect the liver. It found that the herb may protect liver cells from damage, reduce fat buildup, and improve insulin resistance and oxidative stress. These are all key issues in metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD), a common condition linked to obesity and diabetes.
But here's the catch: this review is based on preclinical and pharmacological studies, not human trials. The researchers note that more work is needed to understand exactly how the herb works. So while the results are promising, they are not yet proven in people.
If you have MASLD, talk to your doctor before trying any supplements. This is early science, not a treatment recommendation.
