Living without a stable home is hard enough, but many children and young people facing homelessness also carry the heavy burden of past trauma. A large review of data from thousands of young people revealed that these two struggles often go hand in hand. The study found that 61.7% of those aged 24 and under who experienced homelessness had faced physical abuse.
In addition to physical harm, about 27.2% of these same youth reported experiencing sexual abuse. These numbers show just how common it is for children in unstable living situations to face significant personal harm. The data comes from a wide range of studies involving over 10,000 children and youth.
While the study notes that results varied across different research groups, the link between homelessness and childhood trauma remains clear. Because these experiences are so common, experts suggest that services for homeless youth need to include specialized care for trauma. This means offering more integrated support from multiple agencies to help young people heal from their past while finding a safe place to live.
