AI-generated summary of the cited source, checked by automated accuracy review. How we work

Key Takeaway
Recognize that digital health innovations offer efficiency gains but require oversight regarding equity and sustainability.

This narrative review explores the integration of digital health innovations and the associated environmental, social, and governance (ESG) implications. The scope includes evaluating how these technologies impact healthcare accessibility and efficiency while identifying potential systemic risks.

The authors synthesize that digital health innovations provide significant benefits in accessibility and efficiency. However, these advancements are accompanied by potential environmental burdens, such as increased energy consumption and carbon emissions. Furthermore, the review notes that digital tools may exacerbate health inequalities and raise significant concerns regarding ethics, data privacy, and regulation.

The authors identify several limitations, including the current lack of standardized metrics and the need for a comprehensive ESG taxonomy. Because the framework provided is preliminary, the evidence is not intended to guide specific clinical protocols but rather to highlight systemic considerations.

Integrating ESG considerations into digital health innovation is essential for ensuring sustainable and equitable healthcare outcomes. Clinicians and administrators should consider these multi-dimensional impacts when adopting new digital technologies to ensure that improvements in efficiency do not come at the cost of equity or environmental sustainability.

This narrative review looks at how digital health innovations can change the way we provide and receive medical care. The review finds that these technologies can make healthcare more accessible and efficient for many people. However, because the review is a narrative summary rather than a clinical trial, the findings are preliminary and not intended to change immediate medical practice.

While the benefits are clear, the review highlights several important risks that need attention. These include potential increases in carbon emissions and energy use, as well as concerns regarding data privacy and ethical regulations. There is also a risk that these technologies could unintentionally increase health inequalities for some groups.

To make digital health sustainable, the authors suggest that developers and policymakers must consider environmental, social, and governance factors. Currently, the field lacks standardized metrics to measure these impacts. Patients and providers should view these findings as a starting point for creating safer, more equitable digital healthcare systems.

What this means for you:
Digital health offers better access but requires careful management of privacy, equity, and environmental impacts.

Common questions

What are the benefits of digital health innovations?

Digital health innovations can offer significant benefits in both accessibility and efficiency. These tools can help more people reach healthcare services more easily. However, because this is a narrative review and not a clinical trial, these findings are preliminary and do not provide specific data on individual patient outcomes.

Are there any risks to using digital health technology?

Yes, there are several risks to consider. These include potential environmental burdens like higher energy consumption and carbon emissions. There are also concerns regarding data privacy, ethical regulations, and the possibility that these technologies could increase health inequalities for certain populations.

Is digital health safe for everyone to use?

The review notes that while digital tools offer benefits, they raise concerns regarding ethics and data privacy. Because the study is a narrative review and not a clinical trial, it does not provide specific safety data or adverse event reports. You should talk to your doctor about how these tools fit your specific needs.

Digital health innovations are increasingly recognized as cost-efficient and scalable solutions to improve healthcare delivery and accelerate progress toward the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). However, limited research has examined these technologies within broader socio-economic and sustainability contexts, particularly regarding Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) risks and potential trade-offs. This narrative review integrates digital health within an environmental, social, and governance (ESG) framework. Literature on digital health, sustainability, and ESG-relevant risk was identified through searches of PubMed/MEDLINE, Scopus, Web of Science, and Google Scholar, supplemented by reference-list screening and purposive inclusion of policy and institutional reports; searches were last updated in May 2026. Eligible sources addressed digital health technologies and engaged with at least one ESG domain. Sources were synthesised thematically across the environmental, social, and governance domains, and a conceptual framework was developed to support evaluation of ESG-related trade-offs in digital health implementation. The review highlights that digital health solutions, while offering significant benefits in accessibility and efficiency, may exacerbate health inequalities, increase environmental burdens through energy consumption and carbon emissions, and raise governance concerns related to ethics, data privacy, and regulation. The findings emphasize the interdependence of ESG factors and demonstrate that isolated evaluation of these dimensions can lead to incomplete or misleading conclusions. A preliminary framework is proposed to guide the systematic assessment of ESG trade-offs in digital health interventions. Integrating ESG considerations into digital health innovation is essential to ensure sustainable and equitable healthcare outcomes. The proposed framework provides a foundation for evaluating the broader impacts of digital health technologies, though further research is needed to develop standardized metrics and a comprehensive ESG taxonomy. Incorporating ESG principles into policy and implementation strategies will enhance the long-term effectiveness and societal value of digital health solutions.
