When doctors treat squamous cell carcinoma, they look closely at where the cancer spreads. This type of cancer can move to nearby lymph nodes, which are part of the body's immune system. Recent data shows that the location of these spread sites actually differs based on a patient's sex.
In this review of cases, researchers found that men were more likely to have cervical lymph node involvement (63.4% for men compared to 39.5% for women). Conversely, women were more likely to show inguinal lymph node involvement (39.5% for women compared to 17.1% for men). These differences help doctors understand how the disease presents in different people.
While many patients received a mix of surgery, radiation, and systemic therapy, very few—only about 6.3%—received immunotherapy. Because this study looked at a small group of cases without genetic testing data, it highlights why personalized treatment plans are so important for managing these specific cancer types.
