This conceptual perspective explores a Circular Leadership Model designed specifically for the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health workforce. The model moves away from traditional hierarchical structures by focusing on kinship, connection, collective responsibility, storytelling, reflection, and shared decision-making.
The goal is to create a more culturally safe workplace. By using these principles, the model aims to improve worker wellbeing, increase staff retention, and build leadership capacity within the community. These benefits are currently presented as hypotheses that need further testing through pilot evaluations.
Because this is a conceptual piece, the results have not been tested in a real-world trial yet. Additionally, it is not yet known if this model would be effective for the broader healthcare workforce outside of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community. It serves as a proposed strategy to address current gaps in support structures.
