Monoferric is a new intravenous (IV) iron product. The FDA approved it to treat iron deficiency anemia in adults. This is a condition where the body does not have enough iron to make healthy red blood cells. The drug is given through a vein, not as a pill.
The approval covers two groups. The first is adults who cannot tolerate iron pills or who did not get a good result from them. The second is adults with chronic kidney disease who are not on dialysis. In two large studies, Monoferric worked about as well as an older IV iron product called iron sucrose. It raised hemoglobin levels over eight weeks.
One thing that may help patients is that Monoferric can be given as a single dose. That could mean fewer visits for some people. The label also warns that it should only be given where staff and medicines are ready to treat serious allergic reactions.
This approval gives doctors another option, but it is not right for everyone. If you have anemia or kidney disease, talk with your doctor about whether IV iron is safe and appropriate for you. Do not start or change any treatment on your own.
