Chlamydia is a very common infection, but knowing exactly how many people are affected helps health experts create better ways to protect the public. A large review of 169 different publications found that about 50% of the general population in Canada has had a chlamydia infection at some point in their lives.
While current urogenital infections are lower, around 4.4% of people currently have an active infection. The data also looked closely at specific groups. For example, among men who have sex with men and transgender people, the rates for anorectal infections were higher than those for other types of sites.
Researchers also noticed that younger people are more likely to have the infection than those over age 25. While the numbers show a steady decline of about 3% each year, the data highlights a clear need for better public health responses and the development of vaccines.
