Kounis syndrome is a rare condition where an allergic reaction causes chest pain and heart damage. This review looked at 71 reported cases to understand who gets sick and how they fare. The data comes from case reports and small groups of patients, which means we cannot draw firm conclusions. Still, the patterns are clear enough to guide care.

Most patients were men, making up about three quarters of the group. Many showed signs of heart blockage on scans, seen in 42 percent of cases. This suggests the heart muscle is often affected during the allergic event. Despite these risks, the outlook is generally good. Recovery was the main outcome for 94 percent of patients.

However, the situation is not always positive. Four percent of patients died, and some suffered cardiac arrest or severe shock. The available evidence is limited because most reports are small and vary in how they describe the illness. These gaps make it hard to predict exactly what will happen to any single person.

What this means for you:
Most patients recover, but some face serious risks like heart attack or death.
