A new clinical trial found that a smartphone app designed to support cirrhosis patients and their caregivers significantly reduced avoidable hospital readmissions. The study involved 232 patient-caregiver pairs (464 people) at three medical centers. Half used the Patient Buddy App (PBA) after discharge, while the other half received standard care.
After 30 days, only 10.3% of app users had an avoidable readmission, compared to 19.8% in the standard care group. That is about a 50% lower risk. All-cause readmissions were also lower: 30% versus 48%. The app was well liked by most users.
The study was originally designed differently but had to be changed because of the COVID-19 pandemic. This may affect the reliability of the results. The researchers note that the app shows promise, but more studies are needed to confirm the findings.
For now, this research suggests that digital tools may help manage cirrhosis at home. Patients and caregivers should talk to their doctors about what support options are available.
