Doctors have long used CDK4/6 inhibitors like palbociclib, ribociclib, and abemaciclib to treat breast cancer. Now a new review suggests these drugs could also help people with advanced digestive cancers, including esophageal, stomach, colon, liver, and pancreatic cancer.

The review looked at how these drugs work in the lab and in early studies. It found that they may slow tumor growth by blocking a key pathway that cancer cells need to divide. But digestive cancers are tricky. They often have a complex immune environment and can develop resistance to the drugs.

Researchers say the next step is to find better ways to predict which patients will respond and to combine these drugs with other treatments. The review is based on existing studies, not new patient data, so we need more research before these drugs become standard care for digestive cancers.

What this means for you:
CDK4/6 inhibitors may help treat digestive cancers, but more research is needed.
