Researchers analyzed data from multiple long-term studies to see if following plant-based diets affects the risk of developing memory problems or dementia. They looked at information from over 221,000 adults who did not have cognitive impairment when the studies began. The diets were categorized as overall plant-based, healthful plant-based (emphasizing whole grains, fruits, vegetables), and unhealthful plant-based (including refined grains, sugary drinks, and processed foods).

The main finding was that people who followed plant-based diets more closely had a lower risk of developing cognitive impairment or dementia. Specifically, the analysis estimated a 26% lower risk compared to people with lower adherence to these diets. Importantly, the benefit was linked to healthful plant-based patterns, while diets high in less healthy plant-based foods were actually associated with a higher risk.

This research has important limitations. The studies were observational, meaning they tracked people's existing diets rather than testing a specific diet plan. This makes it difficult to prove that the diet itself caused the lower risk, as other lifestyle factors could play a role. The analysis also showed very high statistical variability between the included studies.

Readers should understand this as promising but not definitive evidence. It suggests that diets rich in healthy plant foods might support brain health over time, but more rigorous trials are needed to confirm this. The key takeaway is that the quality of plant foods matters—a diet focused on whole, unprocessed plants appears more beneficial than one including processed plant-based items.

What this means for you:
Healthy plant-based diets are linked to lower dementia risk, but this doesn't prove they prevent it. Food quality matters.
