Researchers reviewed existing studies to see if focused ultrasound treatment helps women with both cervical cell changes (called LSIL) and high-risk HPV infection. They looked at how well the treatment cleared the HPV virus and resolved the cervical cell changes compared to just watching and waiting or using interferon treatment.

The review found that among women who received focused ultrasound, about 74% cleared their HPV infection, and 94% had their cervical cell changes return to normal. The treatment appeared significantly more effective for clearing HPV than either observation or interferon treatment.

It's important to know this review combined studies that were observational, meaning they didn't randomly assign women to treatments. This makes it harder to be certain the ultrasound itself caused the improvements. The studies also came mostly from specific geographic areas, which might not represent all women. The review did not report on side effects or long-term outcomes like whether the cell changes come back.

This suggests focused ultrasound could be a helpful option, but more rigorous research is needed to confirm these findings and understand the treatment's safety and long-term effects before it becomes a standard recommendation.

What this means for you:
Early research suggests focused ultrasound may help with cervical cell changes, but more evidence is needed.
