If your job requires you to work through the night, your long-term kidney health might be at stake. A large study looking at over 250,000 people found that those working permanent night shifts faced a higher risk of developing chronic kidney disease (CKD).
Researchers analyzed data from the UK Biobank to see how shift patterns affect kidney health. They found that permanent night shift workers had a 19 percent higher risk of developing the condition compared to people who rarely or never worked nights. The study also suggested that the risk might be even higher for people who already have a high genetic risk for kidney disease and work permanent night shifts.
It is important to remember that this was an observational study. This means the researchers found an association between night shifts and kidney disease, but they did not prove that the shifts actually cause the damage. There could be other factors involved. However, these findings suggest that changing how we schedule shifts might help protect kidney health in the future.
