Living with schizophrenia often involves more than just hearing voices. It can involve significant struggles with memory, focus, and managing daily tasks. Recent research looks at how virtual reality (VR) might help patients navigate these challenges by providing a controlled environment for practice.
Researchers analyzed data from 678 people to see if VR programs could make a difference. They found that VR interventions significantly improved core symptoms and cognitive functions. Specifically, virtual tools focused on cognition helped improve negative symptoms, which are the less visible signs of the condition like withdrawal or lack of motivation.
While the results for mental health and memory were promising, social skills did not show significant improvement in this review. The study also notes that many of the individual trials had small groups and short follow-up times. More large-scale studies are needed to see how these benefits last over a long period.
