Imagine getting a medical test that says you are fine, only to later discover a serious problem that the test missed. A new study looked at nearly 48,000 patients across four lung clinics to see if standard breathing tests were missing hidden dangers. The researchers focused on people who had 'restriction' in their lung function but still passed the standard breathing test, which is often called normal spirometry.

The findings were stark. Those with these hidden restrictions were over three times more likely to develop interstitial lung disease, a serious condition that scarring the lungs. Even more concerning, they were 45% more likely to die from any cause compared to people with truly normal lung function. This means the test we trust to rule out lung problems might be failing to catch those who are actually at high risk.

This study does not prove that the test is broken, but it warns that a normal result can be misleading. The researchers found that using standard breathing tests to say a patient has no significant lung issues is not reliable. Until we understand why these tests miss so much, patients should know that a passing grade on a breathing test does not guarantee they are free from serious lung disease.

What this means for you:
Normal breathing tests may miss serious lung disease and higher death risks in some patients.
