Kidney failure is a serious fear for people with lupus. A new analysis looked at 3607 adult patients to understand what happens inside their kidneys. The researchers found that two specific tissue changes are bad news. Tubulointerstitial inflammation and interstitial fibrosis both increase the risk of kidney function decline. This means the kidneys are losing their ability to work properly.
The study looked at how these changes affect patients over time, including those followed for more than five years. Tubulointerstitial inflammation raised the risk of kidney decline by 2.22 times. Interstitial fibrosis raised the risk even higher, by 3.44 times. These numbers show a clear connection between these tissue problems and kidney trouble.
However, the link between these tissue changes and kidney decline was not the same for every group. The strength of the connection varied depending on the type of kidney disease present. This suggests doctors must look closely at these specific tissue patterns to predict outcomes.
