Imagine jumping into a new game only to be met with insults or aggressive behavior. For many people, toxic environments make online gaming less fun or even stressful. While most games have some rules, they are often buried in long legal documents that nobody actually reads.
A review of 84 articles shows that when games use well-designed codes of conduct, things change for the better. These clear guidelines are linked to less toxic behavior and stronger community norms. Instead of just reacting to bad behavior after it happens, these rules work as a proactive way to set expectations from the start.
However, the evidence is still limited because many studies only looked at specific platforms or short periods of time. To be effective, these codes need to be easy to find and read. They should focus on shared values rather than just legal jargon so that players feel more involved in their community.
