A clinical trial looked at how different types of parrot interactions could affect pain during venipuncture, which is the process of drawing blood from a vein. The study included 240 adults with chronic illnesses who were divided into groups to test live parrots, robotic parrots, and pictures of parrots compared to a control group that received no intervention.
After the procedure, patients in all three parrot groups reported significantly lower pain scores than those in the control group. While both live and robotic parrots helped reduce pain, the study found that interacting with a live parrot provided a more significant reduction in pain compared to looking at a picture of one.
Because this was a single-blind study, there are some limitations to how the results can be applied. However, the findings suggest that animal interaction is a safe, non-drug way to manage discomfort. Robotic animals may also serve as a helpful alternative when live animals are not available.
