When someone suffers a stroke while taking the blood thinner dabigatran, doctors must act quickly to manage the situation. A recent analysis looked at 226 patients who experienced an acute ischemic stroke—a blockage of blood flow—while on this specific medication. The study focused on those who received idarucizumab to reverse the effects of the drug before receiving clot-busting treatment.
The data showed that about 66.6% of these patients achieved a good functional outcome after 90 days. During the same period, about 5.4% of the patients experienced a symptomatic intracranial hemorrhage, which is bleeding inside the skull. While these numbers provide a clear picture of what happened in this group, the evidence is still considered very low certainty.
Because this was a single-arm study rather than a randomized trial, it cannot be used to change standard medical practice just yet. The researchers noted that there were several imbalances in the data and they could not adjust for many outside factors. These findings are intended to help design better, larger trials in the future to give doctors more certainty.
