When someone suffers a stroke, the immediate danger is often physical. However, many patients face a hidden challenge: lasting cognitive impairment. This is the lasting mental fog or memory issues that can make daily life difficult after a stroke. Researchers are looking for ways to identify who might be at risk for these lasting issues early on.
In a study of 612 patients who had an ischemic stroke, researchers looked at a protein in the blood called CD147. They found that patients with higher levels of this protein had significantly higher odds of developing cognitive impairment. Specifically, those with elevated CD147 levels were more likely to show signs of mental decline during a follow-up three months after their stroke.
While this study shows a clear link between the protein and brain health, it is important to remember that this is an observational study. This means the researchers found a connection, but they cannot say for certain that the protein causes the cognitive issues. It is a helpful piece of the puzzle in understanding how to better predict and manage recovery after a stroke.
